For sharper self-portraits, use the main (rear) camera instead of the front-facing one, turn on grid lines for framing, lock focus and exposure before stepping into the shot, and trigger the shutter with a timer instead of holding the phone. The rear camera alone is the single biggest quality jump most people are missing.

Use the rear camera, not the front

The front (selfie) camera has a lower resolution sensor and a wider field of view than the main camera, which distorts faces up close: bigger nose, smaller ears, the classic selfie-camera look. The rear camera captures more detail and renders faces more naturally, but it means you can’t see yourself while framing the shot. That’s the tradeoff: better image quality in exchange for framing blind, which is why the rest of these settings exist, to compensate for not being able to check the screen.

Turn on grid lines

In Settings > Camera, enable Grid. With the rear camera you’re framing by estimation, so the grid gives you fixed reference lines to line up against (a doorway edge, a horizon, a piece of furniture) so you can position yourself roughly on a grid intersection without seeing live feedback. It’s a small setting that does a lot of work when you’re framing blind.

Lock focus and exposure before you’re in the shot

By default, the iPhone camera continuously adjusts focus and exposure based on what’s in frame, which means the moment you walk into the shot, the camera may refocus onto you and shift exposure, sometimes mid-burst, causing a soft or oddly lit frame. Locking focus and exposure on your empty background before you start eliminates this: tap and hold on the spot where you’ll be standing until AE/AF Lock appears, and the camera holds that focus distance and exposure value for every subsequent frame regardless of what walks into the shot. Use a timer, not the volume button

Stock Camera’s timer (3s or 10s) fires a single shot, which is enough for one attempt but means retrying requires walking back to the phone and resetting it each time. A dedicated self-timer app that fires a burst instead of one frame solves this by giving you several frames per trip to the phone, more chances to land a good expression and pose without repeated round trips. Framing without seeing yourself

Since the rear camera doesn’t show a live preview of you in frame, a few habits help: use a fixed landmark (a chair, a tile pattern, a door frame) as your mark so you land in roughly the same spot each attempt; take one test shot standing where you plan to be, check it, and adjust the phone position rather than adjusting yourself; and frame a bit looser than you think you need, since it’s easier to crop in later than to discover you cut off part of the shot. A tripod or stable surface (see our tripod alternatives guide) keeps the framing consistent between attempts, which matters more here than in any other self-timer scenario since you can’t see the frame to correct on the fly.

Lighting settings that matter for solo shots

Turn off flash for anything other than true darkness: direct flash on a face from phone distance is rarely flattering. Instead, face a window or other soft light source; natural light through a window is usually better than any indoor lamp. If your shot is backlit (window behind you), the camera’s default exposure will often underexpose your face to protect the bright background: this is exactly what exposure lock fixes, by letting you set exposure for your face rather than the whole scene before you’re even standing in it.

When the stock Camera app’s timer is genuinely enough

If you only need one photo and you’re willing to walk back and forth resetting the 3-second timer for each attempt, stock Camera’s built-in timer works fine: it doesn’t need a dedicated app. The friction shows up once you want several attempts at a pose or expression, since each one means a physical trip to the phone. A burst-per-timer-trigger approach removes that friction by giving multiple frames per walk to the camera.

Solo photography without a photographer comes down to compensating for two missing things: you can’t see the frame, and you can’t press the shutter while you’re in it. These settings solve both.
